What is flash point?
The flash point is a characteristic which is used to distinguish between flammable fuels, such as gasoline (also known as petrol), and combustible fuels, such as diesel. Fuels whose flash point is less than 37.8°C are called flammable, while the fuels having a flash point above 37.8° are called combustible.
There are many methods for determining the flash point of a liquid, for example, the pensky-martens closed cup methods is detailed in ASTM D93, The cleveland open cup flash point method is detailed in ASTM D92. ISO1523 and ISO3679 detailly introduce the determination of flash point by the small scale closed cup method.
How to test the flash point?
Usually, there are two types of flash point measurement: Open cup and closed cup. Light oils that are easy to evaporate are mostly determined by the closed-cup method.
The method: Fill the sample oil into one metal container.The oil is then heated at a prescribed rate and periodically a small pilot flame (ignitor) is passed over its surface. This continues until a flash appears. The oil temperature is then recorded as its flash point.
