Asphalt Rolling Thin Film Oven ASTM D2872
The asphalt rolling thin film oven is designed and made as per T0610 “Asphalt Rolling Thin Film Oven Test” in the Industry Standard of People’s Republic of China JTJ052 Specifications and Test Methods of Bitumen and Bituminous Mixtures for Highway Engineering. It is suitable to determine mass loss of highway asphalt rolling thin film after heating, and the change of penetration, viscosity, ductility and breaking point of asphalt residue after the thin film has been heated, so as to evaluate the aging performance of asphalt.
The rolling thin film oven is also suitable to make test as per ASTM D2872 “Test Methods for Effect of Heat and Air on a Moving Film of Asphalt (Rolling Thin Film Oven Test)”.
Working principle:
The asphalt film oven is mainly based on the principles of hot air circulation and film evaporation to achieve the aging of asphalt. There are heating devices and ventilation systems inside the instrument. Make the asphalt sample into a thin film and place it on a rotating turntable located inside the oven. The heating device raises the temperature of the air inside the oven to the specified test temperature (such as 163 ℃), and the ventilation system circulates the hot air inside the oven. The hot air is evenly blown over the surface of the asphalt film, causing the light components in the asphalt to evaporate and triggering chemical reactions such as oxidation of the asphalt, simulating the aging of the asphalt during actual use (such as long-term exposure to sunlight and high temperature environments on road surfaces). As the test time increases (such as 5 hours), the asphalt gradually ages and its physical and chemical properties change, such as decreased penetration and increased softening point.

What is the rolling thin-film oven procedure?
The Rolling Thin-Film Oven (RTFO) procedure provides simulated short term aged asphalt binder for physical property testing. Asphalt binder is exposed to elevated temperatures to simulate manufacturing and placement aging. The RTFO also provides a quantitative measure of the volatiles lost during the aging process.
